A 26-year-old male is in custody in the Newton County Jail for allegedly stealing a car, while a female suspect is still at large as of press time late Saturday night.

According to Neosho Police Chief Dave McCracken, an officer made a routine traffic stop and he called the license number in. It came back as stolen out of Joplin.

The initial stop occurred in the early evening, McCracken said.

McCracken added the vehicle took off, with the officer in pursuit and then the vehicle was abandoned down by the Senior Center (corner of Cemetery Road and Carl Sweeney Parkway).

“Two people ran from the vehicle,” said McCracken. “They were able to get some other officers there in the area. He slipped through and got into a wooded area there. Fortunately, a citizen noticed the male suspect, called us and was able to point him out to us and they were able to take him into custody.”

At 7:05 p.m., the male suspect, who has a Joplin address, was taken into custody near Melody Lane and Southeast Boulevard (located near the Neosho IOOF Cemetery). The name of the suspect or the one at large has not been released.

Charges are still pending.

“The female suspect is still at large,” McCracken said. “We are working on some information right now and expect an arrest on that as well.”
