The start of the Diamond football season got off to a rather rocky start and Greenfield made it pay.

The visiting Wildcats from Greenfield rolled to a 42-0 victory over Diamond in the season-opener for both schools at the newly renovated Wildcat Stadium in Diamond Friday night.

“The game last night didn’t turn out the way we wanted, but I was encouraged by the effort that our kids gave,” said Diamond coach Derek Scroggins.

Diamond had five turnovers in the game, including on both of its first two offensive possessions.

The third offensive possession stalled and Diamond punted. And on that punt, Greenfield returned it for a score (full scoring information was not available for this game).

Diamond’s best drive, offensively, came in the second quarter, but a missed field goal ended the drive.

“We knew the key to the game would be whoever plays more physical and whoever could win the turnover battle,” said Scroggins. “And Greenfield was able to do both of those things.”

Diamond (0-1) plays at Jasper Friday at 7 p.m.

Jasper lost 49-12 to Pierce City Friday.
