A big first quarter deficit was too much for the Seneca Lady Indians to overcome against Mount Vernon, falling 70-54 in Big 8 Conference action Thursday.

Seneca fell behind 27-6 to the Lady Mountaineers, but from that point, outscored Mount Vernon, but never could overcome the early deficit.

“We just got in too big of a hole in the first quarter,” said Seneca coach Bob Coffey. “The girls played hard and played well after the first quarter. Mount Vernon just shot the lights out.”

Seneca (6-9 overall, 2-1 in Big 8) scored 18 points in the second quarter, but trailed 39-24 at halftime. The deficit grew to 17 points, 58-41, going into the fourth quarter.

Taylor McDaniel scored 15 points, while Jacci Yust added 13 points for Seneca.

Erin Rust paced Mount Vernon with 22 points.

Seneca returns to action Saturday, playing at Miami, Okla., starting at 5 p.m. with the JV game.
