A Neosho resident accidentally shot himself in the foot with a gun Sunday afternoon.

Mark Young, at 317 S. Valley St., was handling a hunting rifle, which he believed to be unloaded, when it discharged into the top of his foot.

“Pretty bad deal,” said Neosho police chief Dave McCracken. “I understand that he may probably lose a toe.”

The accident happened around 1 p.m. Sunday. Young was transported to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin by a Newton County ambulance.

“Apparently the gun was going to be a gift or something, and he was looking it over,” McCracken said.

The full police report should be available Tuesday morning.
