  • The Neosho Fire Department announced Tuesday that, effective immediately, there is a citywide burn ban in effect.
In response to the dry conditions, Neosho is imposing a burn ban, which prohibits the burning of yard waste and other types of open fires, such as campfires, bonfires and burn barrels. It also prohibits fireworks and sparklers.
However, residential outdoor cooking in a suitable piece of equipment designed to contain the fire, flame and heat generated is allowable. The burn ban is in effect until further notice, based upon conditions which are being monitored on a daily basis and until the area receives sufficient rainfall across the area.
Violation of the burn ban is punishable by a fine not exceed $500 or imprisonment in the county jail for a period not exceeding 90 days, or both.
    Ways to protect property
    •  Keep grass cut short in and around your property, especially around buildings. Be careful of smoking materials, including cigarettes, cigars and smoking pipes. Discard in a proper container.
    •  Keep debris picked up from around your property. Do not allow debris to pile up around buildings, fences, power lines and poles.
    •  Be watchful of your surroundings. Call 911 if you see an open flame or smoke.
The City of Neosho is encouraging everyone to use extreme caution while the current weather conditions continue and be ever so vigilant for the presence of fire.
