  • The Newton County Sheriff’s Department responded to a stabbing Monday night on Gateway Drive approximately 10 miles northwest of Neosho.
Sheriff Ken Copeland said officials received the call around 10:30 p.m. and responded to the Big Valley Mobile Home Park, located at 5505 Gateway Drive, in Joplin.
Copeland said the victim, Jack Ballard, 32 of Joplin, had been visiting a female resident at the location, when he and the suspect, 26-year-old Jared Prier, also of Joplin, had an altercation, which resulted in the stabbing.
Copeland said Ballard received a “serious injury” and after undergoing surgery is currently listed in satisfactory condition.
He said when authorities arrived on the scene the suspect had already fled.
Charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action were filed against Prier Tuesday afternoon, with bond set at $25,000.
Authorities are still working to locate Prier.
