  • One of the events during the annual Newtonia Fall Festival is the second annual Historic Newtonia 5K Run/Walk Battle. The event will be held at 7:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 29, with the starting off point in front of the Ritchey Mansion in Newtonia.
The Neosho Daily News recently visited with Cathy Sheehy, organizer of the 5K event, and asked her some questions.
NDN: This is the second annual 5K run/walk. Why did you decide to hold it again?
Sheehy: Our Historic Newtonia 5K Run/Walk Battle was a good success last year. At the conclusion of the event last year, we had several people ask if we would be doing it again this year, and indicated they would like to participate again. We also have several new people who have registered for the event this year. The 5K will kick off our 150th anniversary of the Newtonia Battle and we wanted to include this in our special anniversary celebration.
NDN: How many people do you plan on having and what is the registration fee for the runners/walkers?
Sheehy: We have a few runners who have already signed up and there is plenty of room for additional runners. Our run will be timed and we will be awarding trophies in several age categories as well as a trophy for the first place walkers in each division. Registration is $16 until Sept. 22 and after Sept. 22 late registration will be $20.
NDN: Who can enter the run/walk event?
Sheehy: Entries can be anyone between the ages of 10 and up to any age that is willing to come join us.
NDN: I heard there will be a unique way of starting the race this year. Can you elaborate?
Sheehy: Our race will begin with the firing of a musket by one of the reenactors. You'll have to come join us to find out if we have a Union or Confederate fire that first shot. As the race begins, the runners will be going past the campsite of the soldiers who will have an encampment on the mansion lawn. There are some folks who have asked to join us and will not be walking the entire course, but will have a chance to walk either a mile or a 2-mile walk that morning. We're pretty flexible and hope to have others sign up and come join in.
NDN: What is the route for the event?
Sheehy: Our route will again begin in front of the Ritchey Mansion on Mill Street in Newtonia and will go out through the countryside of some of the battlefield areas.
NDN: What will the money that is raised go to?
Page 2 of 2 - Sheehy: The money raised will be used to help with upkeep of the Ritchey Mansion and the surrounding grounds of the Newtonia Battlefield Protection Association. At this time, we use donations and the sale of some books and literature relating to Newtonia and the Civil War to provide the financial support for our association. We are hoping to raise funds to help with these efforts.
NDN: How excited are you for this?
Sheehy: I'm really looking forward to this year's 5K.  We have already received several registrations from children for our youngest age group, as well as some from the other end of the age groups.
