Last Saturday was an important day in my life. It was the start of my 10th year at the Neosho Daily News. I officially started at the paper on Monday, Sept. 15, 2003.
I remember walking through the front door, asking for Buzz Ball (former editor at the paper). Buzz came out of his office and greeted me, showed me around the office, introduced me to the staff and finally let me know where my desk was. After getting the paper out that afternoon, my first assignment was to cover the Neosho R-5 School Board meeting that night at Central Elementary School. There, Buzz also introduced me to the key people such as Dr. Mark Mitchell, superintendent of the school district, to some of the principals and an hour or so later, the first meeting that I covered was over.
The next day, I think that it took me two to three hours just to type that one story.
I ran across that story and others in my early years at the paper.
I have no idea how many stories, photographs, events and other activities that I have covered over the last 10 years, but I can tell you one thing, I have enjoyed my first 10 years here.
One year has stuck in my mind over the years, and that would be the year 2007. There were a number of events that we had covered that year, starting off with the dreaded ice storm in January to law enforcement officers getting shot in March to a church shooting in August to a little girl by the name of Rowan Ford missing and turning up dead in November. There were other events that year, but those really do stick out in my mind.
These last 10 years have gone by pretty fast. I tried to keep some of my stories and I know that my parents have a box of them somewhere at the house. One of these days, I might put the articles in a scrapbook.
In closing, I am looking forward to the next 10, 20, or 30 years working at the Daily News.
