  • Without a doubt, the autumn season, and most especially the month of September, is my absolute favorite time of the year.
I sleep better due to the cooler evening temperatures. I smile more – how can I not when the skies are so beautiful almost every day. I love the pumpkin flavored coffees, and the subtle changes of the first colored leaves.
Forgotten each year, until the next round of football are the piles and piles of laundry. It seems those dirty sock proliferate and breed exponentially in the fall. My laundry room is scattered about with the cast off foot coverings of the proceeding night’s practice. Dirty socks create their own half-life of washing. The more I wash the dirtier they seem.
This time of year our schedules are packed with work commitments and family events. Regardless of where we’re headed or what we’re doing, music plays a prominent role in our daily lives. Maybe it’s the background song playing in a certain national sandwich shop’s television commercials, but I’ve been listening to September by Earth, Wind & Fire just about every day. I’ve also been caught humming the soundtrack to the musical The Fantastics, especially the beautiful tune “Try to Remember.”
September is an amazing balance of fun and work. Fall festivals are just beginning, football is in full swing, locally and at the college and professional level, and the schools are bustling. Everywhere everyone is busy.
Even though the month is half over, there are plenty of things to do on the calendar. Fiber Daze is coming to Crowder this weekend, and the Harlem Wizards will be on campus Sept. 29.
If you’re feeling the wonderful spirit of September — a renewed optimism, a little skip in your step — consider sharing that positive energy and volunteering your time and talents here in Neosho. Bright Futures has great needs and plenty of opportunities to help. Faithful Friends have proven to be a powerhouse advocating for our community’s furry residents. Both of these organizations seem to have great events almost every other week. There are lots of opportunities to give back locally.
Get out, enjoy, and give back right here in Neosho. You’re not going to get another great opportunity like today.
