  • SENECA — Police are still investigating leads in the break-in and vandalizing of the mayor’s home on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.
Police Chief James Altic said sometime between 11:30 p.m. Wednesday and 5 a.m. Thursday, someone spray painted obscenities on the home of Mayor Mark Bennett, including the phrase “FU mayor.” The vandals also spray painted his truck, which was parked in the driveway.
Altic said someone then broke into the mayor’s home through the back door, spray painted a vehicle that belongs to the mayor’s wife, slit every screen in the home, and spray painted a sliding glass door in the back of the house. All of this occurred while the Bennetts were asleep, the police chief said.
“There was a significant amount of damage there,” the chief said. “We’re working on it here at the police department, talking to a lot of people right now.”
An insurance adjustor has been out to view the damage. But some Senecans aren’t waiting until a settlement is reached before lending a helping hand. As of late Thursday afternoon, a small crowd of workers had gathered at the mayor’s home armed with power washers and other equipment to remove the obscenities. Local Good Samaritans have also established an account at People’s National Bank in Seneca to enable Mark and Kathy Bennett to get their home and vehicles fixed.
Altic said while they are talking with neighbors and others about what they may have seen Wednesday night, they still seek information from the public as well. If you have any information on this incident, please contact the Seneca Police Department at 776-8158.
