Major John Warren McKinzie, USAF (Ret.), passed away Oct. 6, 2012, at Riverside Regional Hospital in Newport News, Va.
John was born Sept. 6, 1932, in Neosho, to Dan and Sarah McKinzie.
He was preceded in death by his son, John Warren McKinzie, V; his parents; and his brother, Dan Oren McKinzie.
John entered the Air Force and became a tower control operator, with a tour in Berlin, Germany. He received his officer commission as a pilot, graduating with distinguished honors. He was assigned to the Air Defense Command, flying the T33, F86 and F101. He then became a flight instructor, flying the F4C in the Tactical Air Command. John toured in Thailand as a NIGHT OWL over North Vietnam. He received numerous commendation awards including the Distinguished Flying Cross. John retired in 1971 out of Langley Air Force Base.
For a number of years John had been chief of election board Bethel Precinct in Hampton. In the private sector, John was the owner of Denbigh Home Decorating for several years before retiring again to spend time at home upholstering. John was also a York County Extension Master Gardener. Over the years he has been a judge for several science fairs in high schools and at Old Dominion University.
He is survived by his wife, Edna Beverly McKinzie of 55 years; his daughter, Elizabeth Anne Greene (Roland); two grandsons, Stuart Greene and Matthew Greene (Samantha); and two great-grandchildren, Alanna Greene and Gavin Greene.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Menchville Baptist Church, by Pastor James C. Weston Jr. Interment will be held Monday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m. in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, Va. with full military honors.
