This weekend was scheduled to have the New York City Marathon, the regional cross country championships at Missouri Southern and the state high school meet at Jefferson City.
The New York City Marathon was canceled because of Hurricane Sandy. At first they were going to go ahead with it, but public criticism caused cancellation for the first time in the 42 years of the event.
MSSU will host the regional for Division II and the national cross country meet in two weeks. These events generally bring a good boost to the economy of a city because of the number of people that watch and runners that compete and stay in hotels and eat at restaurants in the city. I saw one group of college women runners at Bob Evans Restaurant in Joplin Thursday night. I gather they came early to get rested and to try out the course the day before the race on Saturday.
Neosho is at the state cross country meet this weekend with their state qualifiers. I always enjoy watching these runners compete knowing that they have out in a lot of work and have to being good condition to perform at a high level in these runs. I will attend the MSSU event this Saturday and it looks like the weather will be decent this time and will make for a good event.
