CHANUTE, Kan. — The Crowder College Lady ‘Riders kicked off their season last weekend with games against Independence Community College and Neosho County Community College.
The Lady ‘Riders opened on Friday like a team already in mid-season form with an 80-67 trouncing of Independence, before topping Neosho County 66-56 on Saturday.
Terai Sadler dominated Independence with 26 points, seven boards and four steals to lead the Lady ‘Riders. Sarah Sagely followed with 14 points. Dorian Briggs had six points and 10 boards. Megan Ritter also had six points, Caprese Marshall had 10, Chloe Nichols seven, and Camila Lacerda turned in 11 with seven assists.
Staci Thomas paced Independence with 16 points while DeKendra Ledoux tossed in 13 and U’knique Gaines added 12.
Crowder led 41-31 at the half and closed out the game with a big night from the free throw line. As a team the Lady ‘Riders shot 26-for-29 (89.7-percent) from the line, while connecting on 42-percent from the field.
“I thought we played really well on the defensive end,” Crowder coach Tina Robbins said. “I also thought we did a great job on the boards. We were definitely undersized, and we out-rebounded them 42-39. We shot the ball well from the field, too. Our kids played really hard, and they played really well together.”
Despite some injury woes entering the weekend, the Lady ‘Riders came back on Saturday and handled Neosho County behind 22 point nights from Sagely and Sadler. Ritter and Marshall each scored four points, Nichols had two and Lacerda finished with 12.
Sadler led the team with 13 rebounds, Briggs and Lacerda each topped the assist category with three and Briggs added two steals.
Neosho County was led with Brandae Carroll’s 18 points while Alexis Hafenstein pitched in 13.
“I thought our kids played really hard, and I thought we played really well defensively,” Robbins said. “It was a really good weekend: A really good start to the season.”
Crowder is back in action tonight when they host the home opener against Seminole at 6 p.m. at Bob Sneller Gymnasium.
