  • Throughout the entire season, Neosho senior Garrett Wood made a point to lead the young Wildcats cross country boys team. On Saturday at the MSHSAA Cross Country State Championships, Wood made one last statement to the team on his way out.
Wood pushed all he had to the center of the table and ran the 5K in 17:06.42, good for 61st in the strong Class 4 field. For Wood, the effort was just as much about showing his young teammates how represent their town.
“I had a great season just working with the boys and getting them up there, getting them ready for when they’re racing by themselves,” Wood said. “I really enjoyed it. Ran some really good times. I enjoyed my race today.”
Meanwhile, teammate Amber Bates, a junior, represented the girls with a run of 21:18.46, good enough for 117th place.
“Those hills are pretty killer,” Bates said with a laugh. “It’s my first time being here at state, so I really didn’t know what Iwas getting into. My first two miles I surprised myself with my times, but when we got over here to these hills …
“It’s definitely one of the hardest courses I’ve ever ran on. It shows that I need to do a little bit more hill work for next year.”
Being the first time at the state championships for either runner, Wildcats coach Tom Thorne said he was pleased with the effort of both runners throughout the entire season.
“They were prepared, they ran well, they came to run,” Thorne said. “We’ve progressively gotten better this year, and Garrett’s been a tremendous leader for us, bringing our young guys along this year. The future looks pretty good for us, and we have to thank Garrett for all of his leadership.
Amber, she’s really done well and we’re real pleased with her. We were pleased that we were able to bring a couple of the kids to see what was going on and the (NHS) administration was very helpful in allowing us to do that.”
