FAIRVIEW — Just in time for the holiday season, the annual Fairview Quilt and Craft Show was held Saturday at the John Q. Hammons Community Center, Fairview.
Crafters from the local area showed off their products that ranged from knitted items to crochet items to baked goods and other items.
The Willing Workers Club sponsored the event.
One of the participants was Fern Palmer, of Fern Palmer's Handcrafts, Fairview. The Daily News asked her some questions about her art and how she got involved in it.
She had products ranging from knitted items to crochet items.
NDN: What are you selling today?
Palmer: Today, I am selling scarves, all kinds of knitted and crochet items, my new lip-gloss, shawls, hats, anything handmade.
NDN: How many years have you been doing these types of crafts?
Palmer: I have been knitting and crocheting for the last 50 years.
NDN: How did you get interested in this craft?
Palmer: My mom always knitted and crocheted. She still does. She helps me make a few of these. She is going to be 92 in January.
NDN: Did your mom or grandmother kind of teach you how to do this knitting or crocheting?
Palmer: Actually, I was self-taught, they did it all, but I took books, I learned, I was self -taught.
NDN: You said you get inspiration from looking at craft books and ideas on the Internet, anywhere else?
Palmer: Pinterest especially. I look at Pinterest all of the time for all kinds of ideas. Not only in this type of work but in cooking, all that kind of stuff.
NDN: Aside from the Fairview show, have you been to other arts and craft shows?
Palmer: Yes. I have been to Marionville, Mo., Republic, Mo., Aurora, Billings and Monett. I have done most of the shows around here, I don't like to go too far.
NDN: Why do you think that the art of crocheting or knitting is coming back into society so much?
Palmer: Maybe the economy. Because people like to make their own things instead of going out to buy them. And I think maybe the traditions of the olden days are coming back.
NDN: Anything else you would like to add?
Palmer: It is just something that I will do forever, because I just enjoy knitting and crocheting. Any new ideas that may come down the road, I like to get in to.
