Jackie Lee Fortney was born July 15, 1923, near Garber, Okla., and died Nov. 11, 2012, at his home in Neosho.
He moved to Missouri, near Branson, and at an early age attended Victor rural school until 5th grade. He moved to Marionville, Mo. in the summer of 1932, attended school there and graduated from high school in 1940 at age 16. He moved to San Jose, Calif. after graduation and joined the United States Marine Corps in September 1940. He served six years of active service, serving in Iceland, San Diego, Calif., New Zealand, Hawaii, Washington D.C., and the Island of Trinidad. He received battle stars for combat at Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian Island, and Okinawa during World War II. After his discharge in 1946, he moved to Marionville for five years, then to Torrance, Calif. for 34 years. After retirement from Los Angles Mechanical Department, he moved to Neosho, in 1985.
Jack married Fern Olga Hurn, June 30, 1956. There were no children born of this marriage.
Graveside services, with full military honors, will be held 10 a.m. Friday, at IOOF Cemetery, Neosho, with Rev. Al Gritten officiating.
