  • Cross country awards announced

  • The 2012 Southwest Coaches Association has named its first, second and honorable mention cross country teams this week, and a host of local runners were amongst the honorees.

  • The 2012 Southwest Coaches Association has named its first, second and honorable mention cross country teams this week, and a host of local runners were amongst the honorees.
    After a successful season on the course, there were nine McDonald County Mustangs, two Neosho Wildcats, two Seneca Indians and one East Newton Patriots runner honored by area coaches.
    McDonald County brought home a number of awards after a successful campaign, topped by coach Darbi Stancell being named Class 3 Coach of the Year in the boys and girls categories. Athlete of the Year in Class 3 went to Mustangs senior Caleb Littlefield, who also earned first-team honors as well.
    Connor Hackworth (senior) and Connor Underwood (sophomore) also earned first-team honors for the Mustangs while Randall Buckner brought home honorable mention.
    Meanwhile, five lady Mustangs were honored. Faith Owens (sophomore) was a first-team recipient while Yessy Domingues (sophomore), Emily High (freshman) and Kylie Littlefield (freshman) were all second-team winners. Dakota Bunch (freshman) earned honorable mention.
    A pair of Neosho Wildcats was also selected in Class 4 as Garrett Wood (senior) picked up second-team honors for the Wildcats while Amber Bates (junior) was an honorable mention selection.
    Emily Sorrell (freshman) was the lone pick for the East Newton Lady Patriots as she garnered a place on the first-team.
    The Seneca Indians also had a pair of runners make the Class 2 list as Meghan Hatfield (sophomore) picked up first-team accolades for the girls while Shane Murphy (senior) was honorable mention for the boys.
