  • Taking time on Thanksgiving morning, two Diamond High School organizations – National Honor Society (NHS) and Student Council students – prepared breakfast for the community.
The breakfast, which was prepared and served by students, consisted of bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, pancakes and drinks and was free of charge.
"It is our way of showing our community how thankful we are for their support," said Kenzie McAlister, public relations officer and student with the high schools NHS organization.
According to McAlister, NHS advisor Shirley Gollhofer and the student council advisor, both came up with the idea for this breakfast.
"They (STUCO and NHS advisors) brought the idea up to the STUCO and NHS officers and we just said let's do it," McAlister said. "It sounded like a good idea, because we try to do a community service project every month."
The event was held from 7 to 9 a.m. Thursday morning in the high school's common area, with the students arriving between 6 and 6:30 a.m., to prepare for the event. McAlister had estimated that between 150-200 people would show up on Thanksgiving.
Asked as an officer of NHS how pleased she was to see her fellow classmates and the public attend, McAlister said, "I am so pleased. It is an awesome feeling to be able to just be a part of it in general…It is really rewarding to see everyone come out and support us and then see everyone in the chapter working so hard to get us here to."
    Gollhofer agreed.
"I am very happy to see it happen," Gollhofer said. "In the past, we have always tried to work or volunteer at the Salvation Army on Thanksgiving Day. This year, we just decided we wanted to do something for our community. "Out of 31 students, I have 29 here today, a lot of crossover, because several students are in student council who are also in NHS. I think for first year, first time, things are going really well."
