The Diamond girls put on a defensive showing in the second half of Monday’s showdown against Sarcoxie at the Diamond Girls Basketball Tournament.
Trailing at halftime, the Lady Wildcats came out looking like a new team in the third quarter and held the Lady Bears to only six points in the entire second half to win the game 31-24 in the opening round of the tournament.
Tied 7-7 after the first quarter, the Lady Bears took advantage of Diamond turnovers and carried an 18-14 advantage into the half. But the Lady Wildcats would gain their focus before returning to the floor for the second half. The turnovers began to go away, and the Lady Bears couldn’t keep up.
Sarcoxie scored two points in the third quarter and four in the fourth.
“We took care of the ball better,” Lady Wildcats coach Brimacombe said. “We limited them to one shot quite a bit in the second half and they didn’t get many offensive rebounds. That’s really been our emphasis, and so far our first two games I’ve been really pleased with our defense.”
Cady Littlefield led the Lady Wildcats with 12 points, Hanna Million had eight, Heather Wilson six, Asia Mahan three and Macie Seward two.
Janelle Depreste paced the Lady Bears with six points.
Diamond (1-1) entertains Jasper at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Diamond Tournament.
