The East Newton girls kicked off their season on Monday at the Ash Grove Tournament where they fell to Crane, 43-34.
Perhaps some dreaded first-game jitters were the culprit for East Newton’s slow start. Regardless, the young Lady Patriots team outscored Crane in the second half, but it still wasn’t enough to overcome the 31-14 halftime deficit.
“We dug ourselves a hole and got down 31-14 in the first half, and then outscored them in the second half,” Lady Patriots coach Marty Rinehart said.
Crane’s relentless pressure caused some early woes for East Newton.
“They did a good job with pressure,” Rinehard said. “That was definitely a tough test for us to face earl on in the season.”
Again, the Lady Patriots continued to fight. They held Crane to just two points in the third quarter during the comeback bid.
“We competed pretty well in the second half,” Rinehart said. “I was happy with our effort coming back. We could have quit playing, but the girls kept fighting.”
Lindey Broyles led the way for the Lady Patriots with 12 points while Whitney Thomlinson had six, Emily Brummett added four, Haley Heilig five, Shelbey Thomlinson three, Sarah Harper two, Aubrey McDermott and Kourtney Brewster had one each. Broyled also pulled down 11 rebounds.
Loni Johnson led Crane with 43 points.
East Newton takes on Stockton at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Ash Grove Tournament.
