  • DIAMOND — George Washington Carver National Monument officials are gearing up for their annual holiday open house from 1-3 p.m. Saturday inside the visitor center.
The event is free of charge and open to the public and includes a wide range of activities.
“We are going to have craft activities — similar to what was made during the 19th century — for all ages, musical performers, we have special exhibits, Carver Christmas letters, and we are also showing a special presentation of the ‘Christmas in Yellowstone National Park’,” said GWC supervisor park ranger Randall Becker. “Craft activities are nature ornaments, wooden ornaments, corn husk doll making and rag doll making. There are refreshments, cookies, cider and hot cocoa.”
After the crafts are made, visitors can take them home.
Musical performers are Hawthorne, Ozark Wilderness Dulcimer Club and the Riverton High School Orchestra.
At 1:45 p.m., the special program, “Carver’s Christmas Letters,” will be held.
“We have some of the original letters that Carver had drawn, sent to people,” he said.
The letters are not on permanent display, but the national monument does have a temporary display of them, Becker said.
Carver valued friendships and observed Christmas by giving and receiving letters of season’s greetings. Several of Carver’s hand-painted Christmas cards will be on display along with remembrances of 19th century Ozark traditions and excerpts from Missouri slave narratives.
A special showing of the PBS feature Nature: Christmas in Yellowstone will run at noon and again at 3 p.m. Filmed in 2007, this 52-minute program features the splendor of winter in Yellowstone National Park.
