  • Southwest sharp-shooting guard Jordan Epling turned in a solid performance for the Trojans as they downed East Newton in a regular season contest on Tuesday. Epling, who led the Trojans with 23 points, did most of his damage from the free throw line where he knocked down 13-of-15 shots to help preserve the Trojans' win.
After a slow start had the Patriots trailing 9-3 at the end of the first quarter, they came alive with 17 points in the second and trailed 22-20 at the half. They remained within six points late in the fourth quarter until they were forced to foul. At that point the Trojans stepped to the charity stripe and knocked down their shots to put it away.
"We played hard and did some good things defensively," Patriots coach Kyle Fields said. "They've got some good shooters and they knocked down their shots."
Sam Swartz topped the Patriots in scoring with 17 points while Rocky Liveoak tossed in eight, Bryce Zimmerman seven and Colby Thomas and Payton Cook four each.
The Patriots (1-3) travel to Sarcoxie for a 6 p.m. tilt on Thursday.
Meanwhile, East Newton's junior varsity knocked off Southwest, 33-28. Thomas Cooper led the Patriots in that one with 10 points.
