  • The local United Fund – servicing Newton and McDonald counties – received an anonymous $10,000 donation recently.
“We provide funding for 17 agencies that provide services to the Newton and McDonald county community,” said Susan Versluis, president of the United Fund. “Our campaign goal for this year is $114,000, so that $10,000 will be a nice addition to that, along with all of the other contributions that we receive. We are very pleased, very honored and very shocked. It actually came into the United Fund office located right off of the Square. We are very pleased and totally unexpected. We always appreciate any donations that come toward the United Fund. We know that everyone’s budgets are tight, so every little bit helps.”
According to Versluis, this is the largest anonymous donation and the largest single donation from someone other than a business in the community.
The United Fund began in 1957 and the agencies are: Area Agency on Aging, Ache Dental Clinic, American Red Cross, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Boy Scouts of America, Ozark Area Girl Scouts, Children’s Mercy Hospital, Children’s Haven, Newton County 4-H, Cerebral Palsy of Tri-County Missouri, Lafayette House, Newton County Cancer Fund, Student Assistance Fund, Neosho Crosslines and Guesthouse, Salvation Army, Special Olympics of Missouri and Southwest Family YMCA.
The current campaign for the United Fund began on Aug. 1. The fiscal year ends on July 31, 2013. Each year, businesses and individuals have donated to the United Fund.
Asked how pleased she is for the businesses, individuals and others to donate, Versluis said, “I think that it is wonderful, I think that the best thing about it is all of the funds that are given to United Fund stay in Newton and McDonald counties. They service the people that you may live next to, that you may work with, so I think that it is excellent that there is a lot of great organizations out there, but I think that it is excellent that residents of this area want to make sure that their friends and neighbors are taken care of.”
Versluis thanked not only the anonymous donor, but also others who have donated to the United Fund.
“I would like to thank everybody for any donation that they give to the United Fund,” she said. “Every dollar helps, every dollar adds up, it is awesome to receive a $10,000 donation, but we need the help of everybody else just to reach that campaign goal. We are very grateful for the generous gift and we are sure that the agencies that will be benefiting from this donation are thrilled as well.”
