  • In a game that was close the entire way, the Purdy Eagles made their free throws at the end and managed to scrape by the East Newton Patriots, 46-40, in a boys basketball game on Friday at East Newton High School.
The scoring trends seemed to sync up between both teams throughout the game. Both teams scored in double figures in the first and fourth quarters, while only scoring in single digits in each of the second and third quarters.
Trailing 27-20 at the half, the Patriots held the Eagles to a meager two points in the third quarter. While that total would normally help a team claw back and take the lead in such a close contest, the Eagles countered by holding the Patriots to four points in the same period.
The stalemate continued until the final buzzer as the Patriots cut the deficit to 38-36 within the final minutes of the game. The Eagles, however, hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
“I thought our kids played really hard,” Patriots coach Kyle Fields said. “We did some good things and took a step forward in the right direction. We’re getting closer, now we’ve just got to get over that hump. I’m very proud with our effort.”
Bryce Zimmerman scored a game-high 18 points for the Patriots while Colby Thomas pitched in nine, Sam Swartz eight, Rocky Liveoak three and Deion Clark two.
Brent Cornman led the way for the Eagles with 14 points while Cameron Terry added 11.
The Patriots (1-5) hit the road for a 6 p.m. showdown on Friday at Ash Grove.
