  • The Neosho junior high wrestling team won the Central Ozark Conference wrestling tournament over the weekend, besting Carthage 292-234 and Willard (217).
The Wildcats had 22 placers in the event, with five firsts, 11 seconds, and six third place winners.
Dakota Bronson, Zach Ankney, Dalton Kivett, Gannon Millard and Trey Smith all earned first place medals for the Wildcats while Robert Davis, Adrian Hitchcock, Samuel Townsend, Gavin Kelly, Kaleb Larson, Trentin Ethridge, Zeb House, John Meyer, Dylan Smith, Cameron Son and Justin Spalding each grabbed second and Caderson Helgan, Zane Herrin, Johnsper Septey, Tyson Hice, Ben Jackson and Zachary Plummer brought home third place.
Said coach Tyler Gordon, “We set a goal six weeks ago, and (last weekend) we were able to reach that goal. It’s inspiring to watch these young men be successful in obtaining something for which they have worked so hard. I am excited to be a part of a community that supports our athletic program like what I witnessed at the conference tournament. A big thanks to all of the parents and fans of the wrestling program who were able to drive so far and show so much enthusiasm for our young people.”
Millard, an eighth grader, said, “We did awesome. It was a long day, but we were able to stay focused and seen our goal to the end.”
Ankney, also an eighth grader, was looking forward to the future saying, “I am looking forward to bettering myself for this team when we continue this success in high school.”
Another eighth grader, Trey Smith, added, “I can’t wait to continue wrestling with my brothers in high school next year. (I’m) proud to be a part of this team. We earned it!”
