  • A last second 3-pointer wasn’t enough for the East Newton Lady Patriots as their comeback bid fell short against Webb City on Thursday at East Newton High School, 47-46.
    After trailing 19-14 at halftime, the Lady Patriots began a comeback bid in the second half. But, trailing 45-43, East Newton turned the ball over with 18 seconds left. The Lady Patriots then fouled Mikaela Burgess with three seconds left and she hit two free throws to make it 47-43.
    The Lady Patriots then sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cap the scoring.
    Desirea Buerge led the Lady Cardinals with 20 points while Casey Heger finished with 15, Burgess seven, Megan Heman three and Katelin Beason two.
    Haley Heilig turned in 12 points for East Newton while Emily Brummett chipped in nine, Aubrey McDermott and Lindey Broyles seven, Shelbey Thomlinson six and Kourtney Brewster five.
    The Lady Patriots (3-3) travel to take on Marionville at 6 p.m. Monday.
    East Newton also won the junior varsity game on Thursday, 43-42, in overtime. Laura Hopper led East Newton with 15 points.
