The McDonald County boys basketball team couldn’t make a late lead stick and fell to the Grove Ridgerunners, 42-39, on Saturday at McDonald County High School.
Despite falling behind in the fourth quarter, the Ridgerunners continued to battle, answering the Mustangs with a pair of late jumpers to re-gain the lead.
But with eight seconds remaining, the Mustangs still had a chance. After a quick timeout, they got the three-point look they desired, but the shot didn’t go in and the Ridgerunners secured the victory.
“The kids played extremely hard,” Mustangs coach Trent Barratt said. “They competed hard. Defensively, I was proud of their effort. We’ve just got to start scoring and hitting shots.”
Spencer Londagin led the Ridgerunners with 17 points while Jake Spychalski turned in 13.
Tyler Sherwood led the Mustangs with 11 points while Tyrell Lett tossed in eight, Jake Wood seven, Drey Fickle six, Josh Serr five and Pablo Alvarez two.
The Mustangs (1-4) travel to East Newton for a 6 p.m. showdown on Tuesday.
