  • There are less than two weeks remaining to enter the race for a seat on the Neosho R-5 School Board, yet, as of Thursday, only one Neosho resident has filed to run.
Jonathan Russell, a member of Bright Futures Neosho and the group's former advisory board chairman, has thrown his hat into the race for one of the two three-year terms coming open in April.
Filing began Dec. 11 and closes at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15.
There are two seats expiring in April; those of board vice president Chris Parks and board secretary Mike Stauffer.
Stauffer is finishing up his first term on the Neosho R-5 School Board, having first been elected in April 2010.
Parks is in his second term on the school board, and was first elected to his position in April 2007.
So far, neither has filed for re-election.
However, Tonya Patterson, assistant to the superintendent, said it is fairly common for candidates to sign up near the end of the filing period.
Those interested in filing for school board must be a citizen of the United States, a resident taxpayer of the Neosho R-5 School District, have resided in Missouri for at least one year preceding the election, be at least 24 years of age, must not be a registered sex offender or required by law to register as a sex offender, must not be serving a sentence or period of probation for a felony or a crime that if committed in Missouri would have been a felony, and must have never plead guilty or no contest, nor been convicted of a felony associated with elections.
Eligible prospective candidates may file at the superintendent's office, during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 418 Fairground Road in Neosho.
Filing will be open until 5 p.m. on the last day.
Candidates will be given a number when they enter the administration building and will be placed on the ballot in the order in which they file.
The election is set for Tuesday, April 2.
For more information, contact Patterson at 451-8600.
