Conference play wasted no time in heating up as the East Newton girls and Lamar Tigers locked horns in a Big 8 showdown at East Newton High School on Thursday.
The Lady Patriots got the better end of the battle, however, as they went ahead early and held on for a thrilling 51-47 victory.
The Lady Patriots went ahead 13-9 at the end of the first quarter and held a 31-24 advantage at halftime. The Lady Tigers would threaten in the third quarter as they fought back to trim the deficit to two points (39-37).
The seesaw battle continued in the fourth quarter, but East Newton managed to close it out despite being outscored in the second half (23-20).
Emily Brummett led the way for the Lady Patriots with 12 points while Shelbey Thomlinson chipped in eight, Ellie White two, Kortney Cambers two, Haley Heilig five, Laura Hopper seven, Whitney Thomlinson two, Sarah Harper six and Kourtney Brewster seven.
Tara Jackson and Brooke McDonald each scored 12 for the Lady Tigers while Ryan O’Sullivan added 10, Trinity Cornell four and Chynna Moore seven.
