Crowder women’s basketball coach Tina Robbins has been demanding to see improvement from her team not only defensively, but in the rebounding department as well. On Saturday, she saw obvious signs that her team is heeding that advice.
Facing the 16-1 Mineral Area Lady Cardinals — winners of 11-straight entering Saturday’s contest — the Lady ‘Riders were in control from the get-go and cruised to a 67-55 victory in the NJCAA Region 16 opener.
It was a big win for the Lady ‘Riders, who improved to 14-4 overall.
“I thought our kids played really well today,” Robbins said Saturday. “I’ve been harping on them a little about defense and rebounding lately, and I thought we did a really good job of both today. Holding Mineral Area to 55 (points) is a real task.”
Credit the Lady ‘Riders for the improvement they’ve shown over the past week. They out-rebounded the Lady Cardinals 37-27 in the game and built a commanding 38-23 lead at halftime. Terai Sadler and Chloe Nichols each pulled down eight boards apiece to lead Crowder in that category.
It was a nice win for the Lady ‘Riders’ program.
“It was good to get a region win under our belt,” Robbins said. “I thought we really played hard today and we played well.”
Sadler and Dorian Briggs led Crowder with 15 points apiece while Nichols added five, Sarah Sagely 10, Caprese Marshall five, Camila Lacerda 11, Megan Ritter none and Seleena Neal six. Lacerda chipped in nine assists while Sadler added three steals. Nichols, Marshall and Lacerda each turned in a pair of steals.
Ashleigh Bow and Janelle Travis both scored 15 for the Lady Cardinals while Courtney Knuckles had zero, Chelsea Roberts 10, Chelsea Pannier three, Tayla Corrigan two, Riley Owens zero, Katelyn Sager two, Riley Huff three, Courtney Fisher three and Joelle Daniel two.
The Lady ‘Riders are back at home on Tuesday where they’ll face North Arkansas at 6 p.m.
