  • The Mount Vernon boys basketball team went on a run in the third quarter of Friday's game against East Newton and used that stretch to put the Patriots away en route to a 58-31 Big 8 Conference victory.

  • The Mount Vernon boys basketball team went on a run in the third quarter of Friday's game against East Newton and used that stretch to put the Patriots away en route to a 58-31 Big 8 Conference victory.
    The Patriots (3-12, 0-2 Big 8) kept it close for most of the first half until a late surge by the Mountaineers allowed them to take a 26-15 lead into the locker room at halftime. That late momentum carried over into the second half as well, as the Mountaineers went on a 17-2 rally in the third quarter to stretch it to 43-17 at the end of the third.
    Zane Phillips led the way for the Mountaineers on offense as he poured in 16 points while Shane Williams added 13 and Luke Call 11.
    Bryce Zimmerman led the Patriots with 12 points while Deion Clark contributed nine, Sam Swartz four, Jacob Patterson one and Zack Deman four.
    The Patriots entertain McAuley Catholic at 6 p.m. Friday.
    Mount Vernon won the junior varsity game on Friday as well, 39-22. Owen Bennion led the Patriots with eight points.
