  • The East Newton Lady Patriots just could not get the ball inside the paint in the early going against the Seneca Lady Indians on Thursday. Turns out, they didn’t need to.
The Lady Patriots, behind a bevy of 3-pointers, stepped back and knocked it down from long range as they tore off on a 20-2 run. They went on to win the Big 8 Conference showdown, 52-34.
Shelbey Thomlinson was a big factor in the Lady Patriots’ success as she drained six treys on her way to a game-high 21 points. East Newton grabbed an 18-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, went up 20-2 at the start of the second, and held a 31-10 advantage at the half.
“We did a good job of hitting some open shots early, and that kind of got us going,” East Newton coach Marty Rinehart said. “It was a big win for us. Seneca always has a good gameplan for us, and any time we can beat them is a good win.”
Kourtney Brewster followed Thomlinson with eight points while Emily Brummett added six, Aubrey McDermott two, Ellie White five, Haley Heilig two, and Laura Hopper and Whitney Thomlinson four each.
Mirana Heath had a solid night for the Lady Indians, meanwhile, with 14 points, followed by Elena Wood with six, Rachel Butterfield, Courtney Cook and Molli Cooper with four apiece and Willow Rhoades with two.
East Newton also won the junior varsity game, 29-15, in three quarters.
Emily Sorrell finished with nine points for the Lady Patriots while Rhoades had five for Seneca.
The Lady Patriots (11-6, 2-0 conference) are back on the road Monday with a 6 p.m. Big 8 Conference tilt at Mount Vernon. The Lady Indians are also on the road at Aurora at 6 p.m. Monday.
