Facing a tough Southwest team, the Diamond Lady Wildcats were in position to pull out an upset until the Lady Trojans put it away late and won 49-36 on Monday at Diamond High School.
The Lady Trojans (18-3), a team coming off a championship at the Logan-Rogersville Tournament, held a slim 29-26 advantage entering the fourth before coming alive for 20 points in what was by far their best quarter of the night.
“I thought we played them pretty well,” Lady Wildcats coach Brian Brimacombe said. “In the fourth quarter we just ran out of gas.”
And the Lady Trojans hit the gas. With seven 3-pointers in the game, 12 of Southwest’s 20 points in the quarter were produced by four treys. That accuracy from behind the arc was enough to stay in front.
Jamie Shrum had a big night for Southwest with 18 points. Makayla Mitchell turned in 13, Kayla Mettlach had eight, Shannon Mitchell six and Nichole Ickes and Montana Hendrix two each.
Cady Littlefield led the Lady Wildcats with 14 points while Hanna Million added nine, Shayla Jones and Macie Seward had four, Heather Wilson three and Lauren Olson two.
Southwest also won the “B” game, 29-6, in two quarters. Jones, Kirsten Eden and Meghan Dresslaer had two points apiece for Diamond.
