The Neosho city-wide garage sale will celebrate its 25th year with an extra day of bargain hunting.

This year, the traditionally one day event, has been extended to a two-day affair, beginning Friday, April 5, and going through Saturday, April 6.

Gib Garrow and Shana Griffin, of the Neosho Area Chamber of Commerce, updated the Neosho City Council during visitor’s business Tuesday evening at the Neosho City Council meeting, on what to expect from this year’s city-wide garage sale.

“We wanted to experiment with a two-day garage sale, which means that we would like to have one-way streets on Friday and Saturday,” Garrow said.

The event is recognized as the largest garage sale in Missouri, and last year’s sale was expected to bring in an estimated 6,000 to 8,000 people, Griffin said.

While the 2012 city-wide sale was a wet one, the heavy rains didn’t discourage the determined shoppers, as several event-goers from near and far filled the streets of Neosho to find a good deal.

As the city-wide sale reaches its milestone year, Garrow said the organizing committee is producing a special logo, yard signs, and a website to promote the event.

Griffin also said that the Neosho Chamber is connected with chamber branches from across the state as well as the surrounding states, and the sale will be advertised through that avenue as well.

Garrow noted that the Neosho R-5 School District does not have school on Friday, April 5, which means buses will not have to navigate through the thick garage sale traffic.

“That’s always been one of the issues, I think we tried Friday afternoon one time and the buses couldn’t get the kids home,” Garrow said. “I don’t know that we would come back and recommend it as a two-day project because of the safety of the school kids, but we’d like to test drive it one time.”

He said the Chamber will hold an official press conference in February to announce the final garage sale details.

“We draw people from all over, Oklahoma, and the four-state area,” Garrow said. “We anticipate that it will probably begin, much like the Saturday sale begins on Friday, so we’re probably going to see pretty good traffic on Thursday afternoon.”

As in the past, the Neosho Daily News will print maps with garage sale listings.

The chamber is also giving participants the opportunity to register their garage sales on the city-wide sale’s website.
