The East Newton Lady Patriots lost a heartbreaker on the road at Mount Vernon Monday night as the Lady Mountaineers pulled out an 40-34 overtime victory.
The Lady Patriots (11-7, 2-1 Big 8 Conference) jumped ahead 12-6 at the end of the first quarter and led the Big 8 Conference bout 16-10 at the half. Mount Vernon responded with a 12-6 third quarter to tie it at 22 and it remained tied as both teams scored six in the fourth to send it to overtime.
There the Lady Mountaineers took control — outscoring the Lady Patriots, 12-6.
“We did a lot of things really well, especially defensively,” East Newton coach Marty Rinehart said. “They made a few plays at the end of the game and we didn’t. The girls battled hard, and it is something we will be able to draw from down the road.”
Shelbey Thomlinson led East Newton with 12 points while Kourtney Brewster had eight, Emily Brummett and Haley Heilig six each and Whitney Thomlinson two.
Mackenzie Farmer led the Lady Mountaineers with 16 points.
East Newton entertains Aurora in another Big 8 game at 6 p.m. Thursday.
