WESTVIEW — A Newton County school has closed for a couple of days due to the flu affecting students and staff.
Westview School – located between Neosho and Stella – closed on Wednesday of this week and will reopen on Monday, according to the school's principal/superintendent Mark Fitch.
"We have had just a large number of absences," Fitch said. "Some have been flu related, some have been viral related, but with just everything going on, we were down to just under 70 percent, down to the 60s so we decided the best thing to do for the kids would be to close up a little bit."
The K-8th grade school has 120 students.
"What was going on, was that we had a number of students gone, but then through the day, we just kept losing more students each day," he added. "So that is what built up our issue. Last week, we were way under our attendance. Then Friday, Monday and Tuesday, we dropped down into the 70s, almost into the 60s percent."
In the meantime, "We have tried to educate the parents and the students on proper sanitation, proper hygiene, things like that to make sure that they wash their hands, all of those things," Fitch said. "Then our custodial crew is working here over the closed days to kind of try to disinfect to make sure that everything is clean when the students return on Monday."
The students will have to make up the days.
"These will be required make-up days," he said. "So we have some days that are built into our calendar as make-up days, and other days will be made up at the end."
