The Willard Lady Tigers played outstanding defense on Monday as they blew past the Diamond Lady Wildcats, 50-16, in the opening game of the Seneca Girls Basketball Tournament at Seneca High School. East Newton, meanwhile, downed McDonald County, 51-25, in another game at the tourney.
The Lady Tigers were too much to handle on Monday as their defense held the Lady Wildcats to no more than seven points in any quarter. They staked claim to a 28-7 lead at halftime and never looked back.
Despite 12 players scoring in the affair, no Lady Tigers finished in double figures. Chelsea Yates led the team with eight points while Shelby Barrett had four, Makenzie Parker seven, Jessica Fox two, Rachel Williamson three, Amber Percival seven, Jelyne Shaw two, Caitlyn Carpenter two, Carrie Stoll two, Raven Mammah three, Ali Perry six and Mariah Stewart four.
Cady Littlefield led the Lady Wildcats with six points while Asia Mahan had four, Hanna Million three, Kirsten Eden two and Shayla Jones one. The Lady Wildcats (9-9) made scored 12 of their points on free throws.
The Lady Patriots, meanwhile, jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first quarter and never looked back as they built a 28-8 halftime lead.
Kourtney Brewster led East Newton with 14 points while Aubrey McDermott had four, Shelbey Thomlinson four, Ellie White four, Kortney Cambers three, Haley Heilig seven, Laura Hopper six, Whitney Thomlinson three and Sarah Harper six.
Preslea Reece paced McDonald County with seven points while Alisha Ballard finished with five, Baili Nelson two, Courtni Smith five and Kali Hodson four.
