  • Minnie Cleo Spiva Speak, 104, Neosho, died Jan. 28, 2013, at Medicalodge in Neosho.
    Minnie was born Oct. 6, 1908, near Longview, the youngest of seven children born to John Wesley and Martha (Mattie) Ellen Edmondson Spiva.
    After completing school at Stella, Minnie taught school at Cartmell, Lone Star, Diamond Hall, Wanda, Silver Moon and Granby. Minnie furthered her education and graduated from SMSU, Springfield, with a teaching degree. Minnie taught at Central School and Benton School, retiring with 42 years of teaching. Following her retirement, Minnie was asked to start and teach a quilting class at Crowder College. Minnie loved teaching others so she gladly accepted and many benefited from her teaching. She was a member of TOPS and Eastern Star and the oldest member of the Neosho United Methodist Church where she faithfully served for many years. On June 4, 1930, Minnie married Fred Speak of Stella, and two children were born, Norma Joann and James Wesley.
    Those left behind to cherish the memories of Minnie include her daughter, Joann Dale and husband, Carol, Neosho; daughter-in- law, Mary Speak Williams and husband, Reed, Commerce, Okla.; five grandchildren, Ron Dale, Joplin, Don Dale, Houston, Texas, Ted Dale and wife, Tammy, Lees Summit, Mo., Jamie Speak Wooten and husband, Don, Olathe, Kan., and Sheri Speak, Leawood, Kan.; seven great grandchildren, Megan and Rachel Dale, Chloe and Hanna Dale, James, Jordan and Jenna Wooten; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
    In addition to her husband and parents; Minnie was preceded in death by her son, Jimmy Speak; two brothers; and four sisters.
    A celebration of life for Minnie will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at the Clark Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, Dr. Jerry Seigel will officiate.
    Interment will follow in the Macedonia Cemetery, Stella. Friends may call at the Clark Funeral Home, Neosho from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. today and the family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Clark Funeral Home, Neosho.
