After mistakes allowed Monett back in the game in the second quarter, the Diamond Wildcats made up for their miscues with a big third quarter and pulled away with a 62-42 victory in varsity boys basketball action on Tuesday at Diamond High School.
The Wildcats jumped in front in the first quarter 16-7, but mistakes in the second quarter allowed the Cubs to score 14 points to climb back in it.
Though the Wildcats led 26-21 at the half, they put it together and put the game away in the third quarter with a 20-10 burst. The victory pushed their overall record to 16-4 this season.
“We made some mental mistakes in the second quarter and let them back in the game,” Wildcats coach Brandon Rabel said. “But I thought we did an excellent job moving the basketball around their zone in the second half.
“We’re kind of plugging along, trying to get better as we go. “I felt like we made strides attacking the zone. We moved the ball very well.”
Brodie Bien led the Wildcats with 15 points, while Trent Hayes turned in 13, Ryan Jinks 11, Logan Myers 11, Darren Russow five, Austin Singleton three and Tyler Putman two.
Logan Coones led the Cubs with 11 points.
The Wildcats entertain Wheaton at 6 p.m. Friday on homecoming night.
