Aurora controlled the scoreboard in the first half and held off a late surge by the East Newton Patriots to claim a 54-50 Big 8 Conference victory on Tuesday at ENHS.
The Houn’ Dawgs led 11-8 after the first quarter, but took advantage of East Newton’s foul trouble in the second quarter to go on a 15-6 run and take a 26-14 lead into halftime.
The Patriots would go on to outscore them in each of the next two quarters, including scoring 21 in the fourth quarter alone, but couldn’t hang on as Aurora hit its foul shots late to seal the victory.
Sam Swartz led the Patriots with 18 points while Aaron Millet had six, Deion Clark nine, Bryce Zimmerman 15 and Zach Deman two.
Garrett Bader led Aurora with 15 points while Cory Gregory added 12 and Josh Fronnabarger 10.
The Patriots are now 4-15, 0-2 Big 8.
Aurora won the B game, 50-32. Thomas Cooper and Josh Harris had seven points each for the Patriots.
