The Way I See It
My name is Dennis Miller and I am a lifelong resident of Kirksville, MO. I have been totally blind since birth and a sports fanatic just as long. I like all sports but love baseball and am a proud lifelong member of Cardinal Nation. It is my honor to be given the opportunity to write a blog for the Kirksville Daily Express and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it.

This is one of the busiest sports weekends of the year so there is a lot to cover in today’s blog so let’s get started.

You would have to be living on the planet Mars not to know the Super Bowl is Sunday.  Between CBS, ESPN, and the NFL Network, every aspect imaginable of the game has been covered in great detail and they are just getting started.  There have even been at least two shows that I know of on how to have the perfect Super Bowl party.  Personally, I’m only interested in the game itself which I think will be an excellent matchup between two very well coached teams.  I expect a very physical game with the Ravens and 49ers defenses both on a roll during the playoffs.  There are many intriguing storylines going into the game and those will be covered in detail over the next couple of days so let’s just stick with the basics: I predict the 49ers by 7, 24 to 17.

I am not an advocate of anyone taking performance enhancing drugs but in the case of the Missouri Tigers men’s basketball team they might want to consider it.  The Tigers looked lethargic and basically uninterested against LSU on Wednesday night and lost a game they could easily have won.  As I stated earlier the Tigers are in the midst of a stretch of games against the weaker teams in the SEC and they needed to win all of them.  Later this month things get a lot tougher and Mizzou is going to have to get something figured out quick or their once promising season is going to go down in flames.  It is almost as if Missouri peaked too early and we are now seeing the team we should have seen earlier in the season when they were trying to find their way instead of the polished unit we were seeing earlier this season.  Missouri has a chance to get back on the winning track on Saturday as Auburn comes to Mizzou Arena in a game that Missouri must win and win impressively.  Right now the Missouri Tigers are not playing basketball even close to the level they are capable of and that simply must change and change immediately.

After having a week off to rest up and breathe a little bit both Truman State basketball teams return to the court on Saturday as they travel to Bolivar to play Southwest Baptist.  The Truman State women’s basketball team finally received some of the recognition they deserve as they are ranked in the top 25 for the first time in many years.  Hopefully both Truman State teams can pick up big road victories in what will most likely be their last trip to Bolivar for a long time.

The Kirksville High School boys basketball team continues their tour of the Midwest as they have a game in Hannibal on Friday night and a game in Centerville on Saturday night.  The Tigers will be trying to rebound from the tough loss at home against Booneville earlier in the week.

The KHS girls basketball team has the weekend off after another impressive road victory against Hannibal on Thursday night.

The KHS wrestling team wrapped up the regular season on Thursday night with a victory over a tough Booneville squad.  The KHS wrestlers now turn their attention to preparing for districts next weekend.

Over 300 youngsters invade Kirksville on Saturday as the annual kids club wrestling tournament takes place.  Having attended the tournament as a spectator sever times it is always a fun atmosphere and many of the young wrestlers there will go on to be future champions.  It is an excellent opportunity to get out and see some outstanding competition from these young athletes.

We’ll be back on Monday with a review of this weekend’s sports action and I’m sure a word or two about the Super Bowl.  Thanks as always for taking the time to read this blog and please do the same for all the other blogs on this site.

Have a terrific weekend!
