  • The McDonald County Mustangs used a strong second quarter to knock off the East Newton Patriots, 55-47, in a boys varsity basketball game on Friday at McDonald County High School.
Trailing 9-6 after the first quarter, the Mustangs went on a 16-5 tear in the second period to grab 22-14 halftime lead. The teams were deadlocked in the second half, as both teams closed with 33 points.
“I was really proud of our kids in the second half,” Patriots coach Kyle Fields said. “I was proud of them and how we competed. We were able to attack the basket in the fourth quarter. They didn’t quit, they kept fighting.”
The Patriots cut the deficit to three points (47-44) with under a minute to go in the game, but they couldn’t get a stop and the Mustangs went on to ice it at the free throw line.
“We had some turnovers in the second quarter and couldn’t buy a basket,” Fields said. “We had some easy and open shots, but couldn’t get them to fall. There in the fourth quarter we couldn’t get a big stop when we needed one.”
Tyler Sherwood led the Mustangs with 15 points while Drey Fickle had 12, Pablo Alvarez eight, Drew Harmon five, Tyrel Lett six, Daton Aubrey three and Josh Serr six.
Bryce Zimmerman led the Patriots with 18 points while Deion Clark had 10, Rocky Liveoak seven, Owen Bennion two, and Colby Thomas, Zach Deman and Sam Swartz four each.
