  • Streaky performances from both teams highlighted Thursday’s Big 8 Conference bout between the Seneca and Monett girls.
Turns out, the Lady Indians were able to sustain their play a bit more than Monett, and they went on to win a close one, 38-34.
Seneca took a 23-15 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Lady Cubs stormed back to with 19 points in the fourth quarter, keyed by a pair of 3-pointers from Faith Schmidt and Brooke McClain, to make it close. With 3:30 left in the game, the Lady Cubs managed to claw back and tie it at 32 apiece, but the Lady Indians closed the final 2:15 by making six attempts from the free throw line to seal the victory.
“We played really well in stretches,” Seneca coach Bob Coffey said. “Being a road game, we were flat in stretches. (Monett) did a real good job closing out quarters. We’d bump (the lead) out to eight or 10 points and they’d kind of reel us back in.”
Elena Wood led the Lady Indians with 11 points, while Bailey Skelton had nine, Molli Cooper and Courtney Cook had seven each, and Annie Howard and Rachel Butterfield tallied two apiece.
McClain led Monett with 19 points, while Schmidt had eight, Kelsey Wiseman five and Kailee Tickner two.
The Lady Indians also won the junior varsity bout, 36-24, with Wood leading the team again with 15 points.
Seneca (8-15, 1-4 conference) is at Lamar at 6 p.m. Monday.
