  • The East Newton girls had little trouble dispatching Cassville on Thursday.
Riding a defensive wave of dominance, the Lady Patriots held the Lady Wildcats to six points in the first half en route to a 50-19 Big 8 Conference victory.
Emily Brummett paved the way for the Lady Patriots with 17 points on the night, while Kourtney Brewster rattled in 11, Laura Hopper eight, Shelbey Thomlinson six, Haley Heilig four, and Whitney Thomlinson and Sarah Harper two each.
Emily Speakman led Cassville with 11 points, while Sydney Curnes and Lindsay Nolan added four apiece.
“Defensively, we did a good job pressuring them a little bit,” East Newton coach Marty Rinehart said. “We moved the ball well and played unselfish.”
The win improved the Lady Patriots to 16-8 overall, 3-2 in the conference. Their junior varsity set the tone for the night, meanwhile, with a 51-19 win over Cassville. Harper and Hopper each led the team with 14 points.
East Newton hosts Carl Junction at 6 p.m. Monday.
