A last second shot doomed Diamond’s boys to their fifth loss of the season and their first Spring River Valley Conference defeat of the season on Friday.
In a game that was close the entire way, Liberal’s Garrett Miller grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back with 1.5 seconds to go to lift the Bulldogs to a 44-42 victory.
Trailing 34-30 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Wildcats went on a run and appeared to be on their way to a comeback victory, but the Bulldogs answered with a 6-0 run in the middle of the period to draw even. Miller’s shot dropped the Wildcats to 18-5 overall, 6-1 in the SRVC.
“It was a close game,” Wildcats coach Brandon Rabel said. “To be honest we were just out-executed and out-coached.”
Trevor Harvey helped carry the Bulldogs as he led them offensively with 14 points, while Colin McNaught, Eli Short, Miller and Austin Long had six apiece, and Triston Mohlfeld and Haiden Beckwith had three each.
The Wildcats weren’t short on contributors either, as Ryan Jinks finished with 20 points, Logan Myers 11, Darren Russow five, and Evan Moreland, Brodie Bien and Trent Hayes had two each.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats won the junior varsity game, 57-47. Michael Bray paced the Wildcats with 20 points.
Diamond travels to Sarcoxie for a 6 p.m. showdown on Tuesday.
