  • Diamond survived a rough second quarter and closed with a strong second half as they edged Liberal, 37-36, in a Spring River Valley Conference varsity girls game on Friday at Diamond High School.
Leading 12-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Wildcats hit a roadblock in the second as Liberal outscored them 15-3 in the frame to take a 23-15 halftime lead.
But the tide would turn in the second half as the Lady Wildcats would go on a 10-3 run through the third quarter — holding Liberal to three free throws in the period — before nudging a 12-10 advantage in the fourth.
“At the half we talked about keeping them off the boards and getting stops,” Diamond coach Brian Brimacombe said. “I’m very proud of the kids. We talked before the third quarter about growing as a team in games like this. We went out and did a good job of that.”
Cady Littlefield led Diamond with 22 points, while Hanna Million pitched in nine, Macie Seward four and Asia Mahan two.
Nicole Sprenkle paced Liberal with 10 points, Baylee Robertson and Rachel Dugan had eight each, Shaylee Stanlee had six and McKenna Higgins added four.
Liberal won the junior varsity game in two quarters, 16-12. Maghen Dresslaer and Kirsten Eden finished with four points apiece for the Lady Wildcats.
Diamond (12-10, 4-2 conference) hosts Pierce City at 6 p.m. Monday.
