GRANBY — The East Newton Patriots closed out the regular season on a good note Friday as they downed Monett 50-38 in a varsity Big 8 Conference boys game at East Newton High School.
While they played solid defense all evening, the Patriots only got better as the game went along. They held the Cubs to 16 points in the second half while claiming their fifth win of the season, moving to 5-18 overall and 2-5 in the Big 8.
"I thought our kids defended really, really well," Patriots coach Kyle Fields said. "The kids really executed better offensively. We just came out kind of from start to finish with a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of intensity.
"We haven't had a very good year, but I'm proud of the way the kids have played hard and stuck together. They never folded. Hopefully this win gives us a little momentum going into the district tournament."
Sam Swartz led the Patriots with 17 points, while Bryce Zimmerman added 13, Colby Thomas 10, Jacob Patterson one, Deion Clark three and Rocky Liveoak six.
The Cubs were led by Kyle Woods with 11 points, Caleb Blue had nine, Jonah Paszek three, Zack Hammond six, Elijah George three and Aaron Patton six.
Monett prevailed in the "B" game, 53-32. Aaron Millet led the Patriots with five points.
