    Inauguration Day

From 1797 until 1933, March 4 has been an important day in the life of our nation. With few exceptions, March 4 had been the day the new President of the United States was sworn in. That changed in January 1933 when the 20th Amendment was ratified. In 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first President to be inaugurated on January 20.
