East Newton pitchers truck out eight batters, while Dillon Bunch and Sam Swartz each had three hits and four RBI as the Patriots routed Liberal 11-0 in five innings on Wednesday at East Newton High School.
The Patriots jumped on the board early with three runs in the first inning. Rocky Liveoak and Wyatt Hurn opened the game with successive singles before Bunch punched a single to score Liveoak.
Swartz lafter chipped in a two-run double to center to make it 3-0.
The offensive barrage continued for the Patriots in the second inning as they plated four more runs to take a 7-0 lead. Cody Jordan and Jacob Patterson each reached on errors to open the inning, and a two-out walk to Hurn loaded the bases. Bunch and Swartz then followed with a pair of two-run singles apiece. Hurn later added a two-run double in the third as the Patriots scored three more to extend the lead to 10-0, before adding one more in the fourth.
Swartz went three innings on the mound and allowed one hit with six strikeouts to earn the win, while Bunch punched out two on one hit in two innings of relief.
At the plate, Bunch and Swartz each went 3 for 3 with a double and four RBI. Bunch also stole a base and scored three runs while Swartz scored once. Hurn went 2 for 2 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored, while Liveoak had a hit, stole a base and scored twice.
The Patriots also won the “B” game 5-4 in five innings as Patterson earned the victory on the hill with four innings, while Deion Clark closed it out in the fifth to earn the save. Jake Brashears picked up the go-ahead hit for the Patriots on an RBI single in the fourth inning.
