  • Former Neosho wrestling teammates Dallas Smith and Blake Stauffer, who helped lead the Wildcats to two state titles in their tenure at NHS, both wrapped successful collegiate seasons this week.
Smith, a sophomore at Ouachita Baptist, achieved All-American status and was runner-up at the NCAA Division II National Championship in Birmingham, Ala., last weekend at 184 pounds.
He scored a 10-1 major decision in the first round, won by pin in his second match, and scored a 5-3 decision to advance to the national championship match. There he fell to Shamus O’Grady (St. Cloud State).
Stauffer, a redshirt freshman at Arizona State University, was bounced from the first round of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa, after a pair of losses.
The No. 11 seed dropped his first-round match against Matt Mougin from Northern Illinois, 4-2. The 184-pound Stauffer then moved on to face CSU-Bakersfield’s Bryce Hammond, the same opponent he fell to in the Pac-12 Championship final match two weeks ago. Hammond escaped with a 4-0 decision.
